I'd like to nominate Philosopher be reviewed for promotion to Commons. The type has been stable and has 1000+ instances. Many philosophers in Freebase are currently most notable as /book/author or simply as /people/person instances.

Seems like a good idea. Here are some comments:

              1. Philip hasn't noticed this thread yet, so I'll save him the trouble of mentioning that it needs documentation. Particularly, Interests/Philosophical Subject and School of Thought need to be clearly disambiguated.

              2. I'm not sure that delegating the influence node properties gets us anything -- there's no way to limit the influences to other Philosophers, for example.

documentation definitely required. (I'd suggest documentation should be a must-have requirement for any type considered for promotion)

re #2. I'd agree with jeff - instead have /influence/influence_ node as an included type, and remove the /philosopher/influenced and /philosopher/influenced_by properties.

The philosophical era type I'd guess is a time period. I'd have a to and from date. Although I guess it may be hard to exactly define, so a preceded_by and succeeded_by properties, expecting philosophical era may be better.

The school of thought type might also benefit by linking to organizations which promote the school of thought. Perhaps a new philosophical organization type?

Dang it, there's always one more thing, isn't there? It might be worth considering deleting the "Interests" property of Philosopher and the Philosophical Subject type. These are copied from the Wikipedia template "Infobox Philosopher", but they're so vague, I'm not sure how to document them.

I think "interests" as a property name is indeed too vague -- we don't want users going around entering philosophers' pastime activities such as ping pong here -- but I think we need a property to capture what a philosopher's equivalent of a scientist's research areas are. Something like "research areas" or "research focuses". Hmm, do philosophers research? Or do they just, uhm, philosophize?

I wonder if it is possible to include a date into the headquarter-property of the organization-type. I think it would be very helpful to describe "old" organizations like the Zionist Organisation (http://www.freebase.com/edit/topic/en/world_zionist_organization). For example, this organization changed its headquarter a few times (Vienna, Berlin, Copenhagen, London, Jerusalem)

            Thanx,

The postal code value is actually stored as a property on the Postal Code type (name "postal code"), rather than the name of the topic (this is an anomalous type in Freebase in this regard). You can display this property in the table, which should help work around the lack of display-name issue.

(The Food domain is bewildering given it's history here) In that course, I thought perhaps that this was typed correctly by me, but now I'm second guessing myself when I made a reference to Diet - followers of Islam. Did I do wrong here ? Does this look right to all ? I've also found that there is also a reference for http://www.freebase.com/view/en/islamic_dietary_laws Oops! Maybe Halal show somehow make a relationship or reference to that ?

But the followers should be individual people, not the class of people that might (or are supposed to) follow it. This is probably another candidate for the Religious Practice type.

A time-mediated CVT is an interesting idea, treating a medical condition as a sort of event, with start and end dates. Some medical conditions, however, don't have a clear start date, only a discovered or confirmed date. The cured part can be equally hard to measure, and the word "remission" is sometimes used because whether a recovery is temporary or permanent can only be determined with time. Nevertheless, for acute diseases or injuries, I suppose we can capture start/end dates.

              What do others think?

If people really want this info, I don't see a reason not to include it. Maybe rather than simple "from" and "to" dates, the properties of the CVT could be "date of diagnosis" and "date of cure or remission" or words to similar effect. Adding a property for treatments seems like a reasonable thing as well. The one caveat is that dates of treatments couldn't be included (but since nobody actually suggested that, it's probably not a very big caveat.)

Often when I enter quotations from fictional works, especially those that are part of a dialogue, I feel the need to capture the original audience. Often it's as important as the speaker. Even quotes from public speeches can benefit from an "original addressee" property. For example, a line from a presidential speech addressing Congress would sound very different (in formality as much as subject matter) from something out of a letter to the First Lady.

How about adding an "original addressee" or "intended audience" property to the Quotation type?

Here's an example where I need to either insert the people being spoken to directly into the quotation, or semantically specify them using a property, a quote from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince:

Professor Minerva McGonagall: Why is it, that whenever anything happens, it's always you three? Ron Weasley: Believe me, Professor, I've been asking myself that same question for the past six years.

In the quote, "you three" refer to Harry, Ron, and Hermione. It wouldn't make sense without specifying that.

An addressee property (and expected type of Addressee) would be useful; as an example it would help anyone searching for anyone who has addressed Congress or the Senate.

Faye - wouldn't the Harry Potter quote actually be J.K. Rowling addressing her readers? (as well as in the fictional universe McGonagall addressing Ron Weasley et. al.)

To resolve this doubling with quotes in fiction, I'd suggest a new type - /fictional_universes/quotation (notice the move to the fictional universes commons). This would have the /quotation/spoken_by_character property moved to /fictional_universes/quotation/spoken_by. It would also have an /fictional_universes/quotation/addressed_to expecting a type of /fictional_universes/addressee. The /fictional_universes/quotation would include the /media_common/quotation type.

Iain: Yes, the author of this quote is indeed J. K. Rowling. The property "Spoken by character (if from fictional work)" is what inspired me. Seems that a quote spoken by a fictional character is often spoken to a fictional character, and it's rather asymmetric that one is captured and the other is not.

Your fictional quotation idea is interesting. Given the number of quotations from fictional works, though, wouldn't a large number of quotes end up cotyped with /media_common/quotation and /fictional_universes/quotation? It would seem a bit confusing for the casual user. All because I'm proposing to add a single property?

Spencer: Cool type! However, it doesn't address the use case where a quotation is not from a public speaking event, but from a private conversation.

              jeff says:

I think a new property is preferable than a new fictional quotation type; in addition to the issue of addressing the audience directly, there's the issue of quotations from the narrator that are not, particularly, addressed to anyone (I mean, yes they're addressed to the reader, but not in the same way that a soliloquy is addressed to the audience). In these cases, we'd have fictional-universe quotations with no speaker and no audience, which would just seem weird.

So I think a new property (and quotation-addressee type), which is explicitly for the explicit addressee of a quotation (as opposed to the implied addressee, i.e. "the reader", "the audience", "the American people" [for those addresses to Congress]), would work.

@spencer: I don't see why a quotation source couldn't be an event. For speeches, the "Notable speech or presentation" type would be better than the speaking event, but it's entirely possible for quotations to come from other types of speaking events (panel discussions, Q&As, symposia, etc.).

The person, character, or group that the quotation was addressed to. Many quotations do not have an explicit addressee, and this property should be left empty in those cases. Implicit addressees, such as "the audience" or "the reader" should not be entered.

I assume "the American people" would be an implicit group, and not to be entered?

If this is important to you, I would open a bug report/feature request at http://bugs.freebase.com  There was a bunch of negative feedback when the recent redesign was introduced, but I've never seen any indication that the designers think anything other than they got it exactly right.  Having a bug report will allow you to track progress and others to vote to support your request.

Personally, I think that "show details" is much, much too well hidden.  Not only is it way at the bottom of the screen so that you have to scroll down to even see it, but then it's in the 2nd half of the compound "edit and show details."

If it were me, I'd have a separate button for "Show details" (even if it went to the same page) and I'd have it at the top of the screen.  This would allow me to instrument the UI to see what the users were actually selecting.  If I were optimizing for the user instead of programming effort or computational efficiency, I'd only have the "Show Details" button present and/or active if there were actually additional details to be shown which were not displayed on the main topic page.

It may be that Metaweb is trying to push people to design their own applications instead of depending on the Freebase.com web client, but that, in my opinion, would be a mistake.

Yes, it's a problem.  We've been trying to rethink how to surface good bases but it's been a slow process as there have been a bunch of other big projects going on.  It's next on the list, though.

If that's just based on the fact that there hasn't been a design change yet, I think that's an unfair statement.

I could have been more general: the topic page remains a focus of our design efforts, and no one on this design team thinks it's exactly right as it stands.  we know we need to do a better job of surfacing the best data that the community has put together for each topic, and are working through several design and performance-related challenges to make this possible.

I'm not sure how many iterations have been done in the last two months, but I just double checked the current display rendering and I think another iteration or two could improve things more.  Since the base-specific consumer page is much more nicely styled than the generic edit page, it sounds like that's an additional navigation destination that needs to be considered in the mix as well.

I've found a potential solution: I've invented my own user type ( http://www.freebase.com/view/user/simonw/default_domain/wlny_known_species ) which I could apply to a species the first time a user on my own site selects them. I believe (though I have not yet confirmed) that this will allow me to bias the freebase suggest search results using a query that looks like this: $('input.species-select').suggest({ "type": ["/biology/organism_classification", "/user/simonw/default_domain/wlny_known_species"], }) My question then: is this an appropriate way of using user types? I'm concerned that this kind of usage "pollutes" Freebase - is it OK for me to be doing this kind of thing? Or is there a better, different approach to achieving what I want to do.

              Good question Simon.

It seems like a sensible technical solution.  I'd guess as long as you attribute freebase in the external website, you're probably OK IMHO.  We've already got the likes of juggle, plopquiz and popstra which seem to be existing schemas orientated solely for use in external websites.

I don't think it would pollute freebase any more than the myriad of abandoned and underdeveloped schemas that lurk around - the freebase website is fairly adept at handling these.  Hence it has a clean 'view' page, and a second 'edit'/'add data' (aka 'geek') page for each and every topic on the freebase website.

Also do check the TOS, if you haven't already.

I got a Freebase data dump file of all of the movies info (as of March 2009) . It is basically a lot of TSV flat files. One file, called films.tsv (after extraction) is a list of over 59,000 movies, with a lot of columns for dates and director and other things that have a 1 to 1 relationship with a film, including columns for a netflix id and an imdb id. This is where I would expect to find the exact data I want. In that entire file, I did not see a single value in the "netflix id" column. The same with the imdb id column: no data for any of the 60,000 movies in there. I DID however see a blog posting (back in October?) saying that Netflix keys for over 23,000 movies were recently added to the films base. Does anyone know if it is possible to find these in one of the data dump files?

The TSV data dumps don't currently include any keys. If you'd like to download keys in bulk, you can use the Link Export (1.6 GB, http://download.freebase.com/datadumps/). In that file, IMDB and Netflix keys will look like this:

              /guid/9202a8c04000641f8000000000009e89 /type/object/key /authority/imdb/title tt0083658

Will that work for you? Let me know if there's anything else I can help with.

You don't need any kind of database to start using this data. If you're using a Unix-like environment, the simplest way to get at the keys you want is to directly filter it as a text-file for the key-namespaces you want using grep, like this:

              grep "/authority/imdb/title" freebase-datadump-quadruples.tsv > imdb_keys.tsv

In this file, keys are represented as "id property key-namespace key-value". You could also filter by "/type/object/key" to get all the keys in Freebase.

As I write this, there are 11,182 topics on the live graph which have both IMDB and Netflix title keys, so 11,189 from the slightly out of date data in the dumps is a perfectly reasonable number.

As an aside, 19 of those topics are not currently typed as a film. The first one of those that I looked at, The Human Factor, is a book and needs to be split into two topics; similar things may well apply for the other 18. Just a small health warning :-)

It seems useful to have a "Peak" type which is distinct from the geography/mountain type. All mountains have peaks, but a mountain may have well-known subsidiary peaks.

One example is the North Palisades in California:

The Wikipedia page lists three well-known subsidiary peaks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/index.html?curid=4665863) and I have started to add them as distinct locations.

A geography/mountain_range often has multiple geography/mountain objects, and similarly well-known geography/mountain objects may have multiple geography/mountain_peaks (multiple subsidiary peaks and "the" peak).

Confusing the issue is that many mountains are known as peaks, whereas there are subsidiary peaks which aren't yet relegated to mountain status (since they are subsidiary and not the mountain top).

I've been thinking, and I wonder if it wouldn't make more sense to simply have the type and property be for "peaks", which would make it easier to compare them or plot them on a map. E.g., if there were topics for all peaks of the North Palisades, you could easily order them by elevation; if the highest peak is considered to be the same as the Mountain topic, you have include both the mountain and its peaks in your query, which is harder.  In this model, mountains with no subsidiary peaks would presumably not have any values in this property.

              What do you think?

+1 for conflating largest and subsidiary peaks under a single type if the documentation is clear in the differences between "Mountain" and "Peak". Will the largest peak always be co-typed as a mountain or will there be a separate topic for the mountain and largest peak (likely often to have the same name)?

Good question. Semantically, it seems to me that the mountain and highest peak would have to be different topics (since a peak doesn't comprise subsidiary peaks and a mountain does, or can). That's my guess, anyway -- I'm not really sure what the practice in the mountaineering or geographic worlds is.

              Pleased to oblige.

Example: The Mahamudra Lineage (Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism)

The Mahamudra Lineage is well defined.  Tilopa taught Naropa, who then taught Marpa.  Marpa returned to Tibet and taught Milarepa.  The lineage then continues and branches - Gampopa, Dusum Khyenpa, etc.  and can be traced all the way to living lineage holders today (over 1000 years of oral transmission).  The resulting branches of transmission formed the 4 major and 8 lesser lineages of the Kagyu school.

This stuff is important if you want to make sense of any oral tradition, especially when you look at events like the Rimey movement where a few very influential yogis spent their lives rescuing and consolidating dying lineages.  The resulting texts, which attempt to preserve the unique flavor of each lineage of instruction, have become some of the most important and most frequently referenced texts in modern Tibetan Buddhism.

In light of that, take a look at Milarepa's influence node.  He was influenced by both the Buddha and Marpa.  There's no way to distinguish that Marpa & Milarepa had a very significant personal relationship of instruction while the Buddha was simply an influence.

You might be tempted to say that it is sufficient to mark people as contemporaries (either explicitly or by means of birth/death dates).  This would fail though.  Proof: Anyone using freebase right now has been influenced by Tim Berners-Lee and we are all his contemporaries, but very few of us have actually been his students.  There is no way for me to find out who his actual students are.  The existing ontology is insufficient.

PS: For a tangible example, use an app like thinkbase to search for Marpa or Milarepa and look at the "student of" and "students" links vs. influence node connections.  Follow the lineage down to Gampopa, who had a lot of important students (this is where many of the separate kagyu schools come from).  Again, compare lineage member connections with the influence node connections.

I think that highlights precisely the issue that Jeff was talking about.  Did Gampopa (Thinkbase link) really not "influence" some of his students or did someone just forget to do the redundant data entry (made necessary by the denormalization) in the "influence node" part of the graph?

Having said that, the Academic type that Jeff pointed to has precisely the same problem. Perhaps the Influencer/Influencer link needs to be qualified by type or strength or ...

One other thing is that, in order to assign a unit, you'll have to change the expected type from floating point range to a plain old float, or create a new range CVT so that you can assign the units to the float properties. (Because the float range type is generic, units can't be assigned to properties it has.)

@spencermountain - you are correct, an explosive charge is measured in 'tonnes of TNT' or 'kilogram of TNT' with regards to blast effect on structures  - for example see Table 2.2 on Page 69 of http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=g-L1O4YszQgC.

Now, whether Freebase's types understand anything or not is an open question. As far as we know, the graph hasn't achieved full sapience yet, but it could just be playing dumb.

If you look at the megawatt type, though, you can see that it has a property "Power in Watts" which can be used to do conversions between units that measure the same dimension (power, energy, length, etc.). There's nothing in Freebase to do this for you at the moment, but the structure is there if anyone wants to make use of it.

Jon, I agree and have removed the type and fixed the incoming topics.

However, I can see where it came from, the architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc was primarily only involved in restoration of old buildings, thus he has been noted, perhaps incorrectly, as the architect of the building - nothing distinguishing him from the original architect.

For the Building Restoration topic, I've quickly crafted together a Project Phase type in the Engineering Base, and any comments would be helpful.

However, this sidesteps the re-occuring constraint with the structure type - the structure type does not take into account that a structure can have multiple architects and engineers, each involved at different times on different phases of the structure's lifetime (e.g. Initial design, compared to a later restoration).  Is there a quick fix to this, that doesn't add too much complexity to the structure type?

Just address a particular facet of this: When a building is first built, things are a more straight forward: there is an architect (multiple individual architects) and/or a firm(s).  The current "structure" schema supports this information.

What to do about subsequent renovations,  I'm not sure, It's somewhat of an edge case, so some provisional schema seems prudent at this point.

In the case where an architect is essentially re-designing a building, there may be some things that can be done. There are numerous cases of old buildings where a key part was kept while a completely new building, by a new architect, in a different style was built up around it.   Is that a new building?  A simple way of approaching this case is: for the original structure topic. fill in the "Destroyed By" -> "Renovation" and the "Destruction Date".  Then create a new topic representing the "new" building.

In some cases, an old building is mostly preserved while a new addition or "wing" is added.  Having a "Building Complex" with a topic for each individual "Structure" can be workable in this case. e.g. Mission SF

Just to add: the two cases I've given are ones where I am asserting, is this "entity" really the same entity, now that a renovation has occured?

Here's another example: The Contemporary Jewish Museum

(without addressing the conflation of the museum and it's main building!)

It seem confusing to list Willis Polk as the architect of this building (he designed the original building that this new design was grafted on to).   I'd prefer to have another topic with it's own picture and details of it's design (and the assertions that this building, for all intents and purposes, no longer exists)

              Does that make sense?

@brendan - perfect sense.  Where buildings have been demolished, or majorly regutted and rebuilt it would be better to have two different topics.   The Tay Bridge which was destroyed in an infamous disasterand completely rebuilt is another example where two distinct structures share one topic as they have a common location and name.

@skud - I really like your project schema, I think it solves all my issues here.  With regards to structures I would assume that the project topic would be named, for example, "Design and Construction of the Empire State Building" and would link to the "Empire State Building" topic through the Project focus property?

I had wrestled with doing this with my 'Engineering Project' type, but I didn't want to start atomising topics (i.e. splitting a topic into a 'Construction of x', 'Design of x' and so on) - and instead settled on a CVT called 'Engineers Role'.

If there is a consensus amongst the Architecture domain that the project schema is the way forward, I am happy to move my Engineering Project data to it and delete the superseded types in the Engineering domain.

@sprocket: You are absolutely right about the Empire State Building example.

I showed Brendan the Project schema yesterday f2f at the office, and he liked it.  We talked about promoting it and making types like /architecture/structure and /computer/software include the Project Focus type.  Brendan seemed fairly positive about the idea of deprecating and hiding the project-related fields on /architecture/structure and gardening the contents of them out to the project types.  The problem with that would be that we'd break some saved views and apps, but then, that's always the problem with schema changes.  However, the number of people using stuff from /architecture is fairly contained and we can probably manage it.

If you wanted to make use of the Projects schema for your Engineering stuff, that would be a great test run of it.  I have to admit I was thinking fairly abstractly and didn't really have any good examples to enter data for (though I did try out the Manhattan Project, as a potential edge-case, and it seemed to work OK).  So it would be great to have some real data using it so we can kick the tyres a bit before promoting.

One tip about the Artwork schema: If an artwork is a still life (or a portrait, landscape, etc.) indicate that using the Art Genre property, not the Art Subject property. For example, the Art Subject of the painting Two Monkeys Stealing Fruit from a Basket includes 1) monkey, 2) fruit, and 3) basket, whereas its Genre is still life.

Something to consider -- the transit line type is for *metropolitan* transport.  A disaster on a cross-country railway wouldn't necessarily be suitable to link to that.  Though the other question is, should we extend those transit types to include long-distance transit?  Should it only be passenger transportation, or should it include freight?  Does freight rail have different lines and stops than passenger ones?  I suspect they might.  I know I've seen freight lines running past factories and dockyards that obviously aren't intended to take passengers.

I see that there is actually a rail line type in jonathanwlowe's transporatationbase, but it seems rather sparse and underdeveloped schema wise.

I notice that notable long distance railways, such as trans-siberian railway and the channel tunnel rail link are untyped, as well as notable rail networks, such as Trans-European High-speed rail network. and the former trans-europ Express.

With regards to railway disaster, this has the added complexity that ver specific details on individual trains (e.g. the 8:39am from Drayton Park on the Highbury Branch, terminating at platform nine of Moorgate station driven by 56 year old Leslie Newson) can be noted.

I think we should definitely model long-distance rail, or else broaden the scope of transit line to allow for it.

Looking at the schema on transit line, I see that it's more to do with the *service* than the physical line.  That is, the things typed there include stuff like bus services, and it says that if you have an express and a local then that should be two different entities.  So it doesn't seem that that type is appropriate for the examples you give.  I almost feel like transit line should be renamed "transit route".

I also think we should have types for "Rail network" and "Railway line".  Railway lines have things like gauge, etc, which other transit lines don't.  And we should almost certainly be modeling types of trains, since I'll bet there's a metric buttload of it on Wikipedia. At least, if I know anything about railfans there will be.

Oh yeah.  Take a look at the Wikipedia article for Narrow gauge rail transport.

I might take a stab at modeling railways in a nerdy trainspotter way.  Not that I am one, but I'll wear the anorak for the cause ;)

This should probably have "Specialization of" added as a property, with an appropriate reciprocal property. Examples:

             Ordered container:

            •  Specialization of Container

            Set:

            • Specialization of container

            Ordered Set:

            • Specialization of Set
            • Specialization of Ordered container

            Associative Container:

            •  Specialization of Container

For a full hierarchy, the STLPort documentation would be a good base.

Also, it may make sense to add an "Implementations" property that links back to the Data Structure topics for which this is the ADT.

Please feel free to play around with the data in the sandbox and let me know if I missed anything. If no one objects to these changes I can add them to the main CS base sometime next week.

Here is the STL documentation for anyone interested in seeing the complete hierarchy that's being proposed.

How do we create a subtype of Job Title to handle Named Job Titles?

like the "Charles Edward Wilson Professor of Business Administration, at Harvard Business School" ?

Ie: these should be titles, but subtypes, so if you say someone is the "Fooperson Chair of Some Such" it would also be the case that they are a "Chair of Some Such" as well.

Named titles are named in honor of someone else, and are typically associated with tenure, or a stipend/salary.  They almost always are associated with an Educational Institution, as long as that type includes think-tanks, and other pseudo educational organizations.

            Thanks,

            Dave

I'd just put them in as ordinary job titles, and leave it at that, since there is no structure to job titles, and I think it a diverse enough field that it would be practically impossible to impose one. If you wanted to show who it was named after, you could add the Namesake type to the job title, which would allow you to link it to the person for whom it was named.

It seems essential that a parent organization be included in this type. The College Board, for example, should be tied to both the SAT and every AP test.

I've begun a new type on Sandbox called National Leader. The type is given to any head of state or government and allows for the assignment of roles (head of state, head of government, head of state and head of government), the country or countries (for instance, Queen Elizabeth II is listed as the head of state for many countries), their tenure dates and their official title. I'd love to hear feedback from the community.

I think it serves a pretty powerful role as being a disambiguator for leaders of countries as opposed to the more generic "politician" or "governing official".

            Howdy Guys,

Haven't been a member long, but I was planning on doing a main domain (not a personal one, but under Special Interests). It was like automotive, but for Cycles (bikes, trikes, tandems - etc).

There are a few personal domains around that are similar. Cyclocross (Mikeshwe) and Bicycles (Collord) - I guess this would be a best of both worlds, like the automotive one.

Am I just being silly? Should I start a personal domain first? I guess this is just to find out what I can actual do, thought it would be better to ask.

            With Thanks

              Hi James,

You're correct - the best way to start is to model Cycling in a personal domain and post a request for review, or for harder data-modeling questions, you can join the data-modeling list (here).

My question back to you is, can you generically represent most or all bikes in a single cycling domain?  It seems that mountain bikes have different specs that people are interested in (hard-tail, full suspension, type of suspension) vs road bikes (possibly materials and weight).  You might want to think about domains centered around a specific biking style.

I was actually thinking of having the cycles only go as far as components. So they wouldn't be based on purpose - they would however have a genre on the model...

I'll do up a domain. Seems to be the way.

                Thanks for the help.

I was adding some of ExxonMobil's major subsidiaries, and I noticed that nanette had created job titles with the subsidiary names in the title.  Those are easy to handle - the subsidiary should go into the employer field instead of the parent company.

However, how do we want to handle divisions and non-subsidiary entities?  For example, "Executive Vice President, Exxon Mobil Saudi Arabia".  I don't see Exxon Mobil Saudi Arabia as a legal subsidiary, so it is probably an organizational "division".   Another example: Vice President, Washington Office.

I'm not sure what the goal is for the title - do we want all VP's to be just "Vice President", or do we want the additional information like office or division included to differentiate from other VPs in that company?

I think in a case like this, where we don't really know what sort of thing Exxon Mobile Saudi Arabia is, the best thing to do is leave it as-is, rather than guessing whether it's a division or subsidiary (Goliath calls it a subsidiary, but I could find no record on Exxon's website, as you no doubt saw as well).  In terms of whether people should be said to be employed by a division, and thus use the title without the division, or be said to be employed by the company, and thus use the title with the division, I'm not really sure which is best.

Regarding job titles, having worked briefly in a large company where every floor had half a dozen VPs, I can tell you there's a huge difference between say, "VP, LargeInvestmentBankRUs", "VP, LargeInvestmentBankRUs France", and "VP, Fixed Income, LargeInvestmentBankRUs Hong Kong". I know nothing about Exxon Mobil's internal organization, but I'm pretty sure division and region qualifiers in front of job titles like "president" and "manager" are significant.

I was expecting to find such advanced types as "novelist", "poet" etc in addition to "author" for, say, an entry like "Jack Kerouac".

I guess the only reason the type system is not so specialized is because most of entries are just "data skeletons" built on Wikipedia articles and the like.

Are such refined types supposed to be added manually by users?

Ok, perhaps I should have read the tutorial to the site before posting. :)

Anyway, it appears that "poet", "novelist" and such are implemented through the Profession field.

Is this the right choice? I mean, does one always need to perform X professionally in order to be recognized as an X-doer?

And when is a poet considered professionally one? When he's sold some books? And so what about poets of the past, who were recognized as such long after they had died?

I think the question is raised here as to when to consider someone to be an X, where X is a "profession". Perhaps the success factor is involved.
This problem is tied to encyclopoedias in general I guess.

Weeellllll... generally we are a bit wary of creating types which wouldn't have any properties.  What types would "novelist" have that "author" doesn't?  Can the same effect be achieved through a query along the lines of "show me authors who have written novels"?

When it comes to poetry, I think there's a stronger case for having a "poet" type, since poems are a different kind of written work which have interesting properties like "metre" and "form" that don't apply to other written works, and are often published and anthologised very differently from other written works.

Perhaps Jeff, who is responsible for much of our Publishing domain, could chime in here?

The reason there aren't types for poet, novelist, essayist, short-story writer, etc. is that, apart from being able to say that "X is a novelist", there aren't really any properties that could go on these types (Kirrily's comments about poetry apply to poems, rather than poets).  I agree that profession isn't adequate for what you're looking for.  We do have separate types for a few kinds of written work -- short story, poem, review, play, scholarly work -- that you can filter on, as Kirrily suggests. But we don't really separate out other types of books, though -- there's no real way to differentiate novels from anthologies from self-help books from dictionaries, apart from the "genre" property (which might help you with the self-help books, but probably won't with the novels).

Yes I had come up with this too on my own, but later.

Anyway, in a future where a moltitude of people could be using the database don't you think it would be quicker and more straightforward to just query for "X of type = poet that blah blah" instead of "X of type = person and profession = poet that blah blah". This could be compared to 'syntactic sugar' (as in programming).
The system you've created allows for great flexibility and if space isn't any problem you should consider the possibility to "flatten" this "propertized" types to true types instead of fields.

Regarding genres I think that a notable issue is raised here, namely who decides what types something is. For most things types aka genres aka categories are obvious but with some works things may get more complicated and subtle... What is Noah to you? If I add the Fictional Character type to its entry would you be outraged? You know there are people in our world that would be.

I've been slowly adding the historical results of baseball's world series, and in thinking about the 1994 world series, I hit upon a bit of a hurdle: this world series didn't occur.

As a piece of information, this fact seems relevant to me. However, in terms of integrating the "non-event" into the site, it really doesn't fit at all with the structure of all the other world series results, namely, "winner, loser, score", etc.

I guess that my question, then, is how is one to deal with non-events that are nevertheless relevant precisely because of their exceptionalism? The expectation of a world series in 1994, given the pattern set both before and after the cancelled season, separates this instance from all others in its class. However, since the actual event never occurred, I’m not sure if representing it in the current schema is either (i) possible or (ii) desirable.

There are other examples of this kind of expected-but-never-occurred event, notably in sports, and I was wondering if there are any ideas/suggestions on how to represent this type of information.

On the Domains & Types page, "Money" is just a label for the collection of domains listed under it. That is, the things labeled as domain categories (including money) aren't part of the data structure per se. Instead, they're navigational elements to help people find related data. So toward that end, we're going for broad labels.

I'd say that "Commerce" is too narrow for the domains and types collected there, but it's certainly possible that another term would better help people find the data.

Creating types in your personal namespace is a great place to start. If you'd like the type to be available for others to use you can check the box to 'publish this type' in type editor -- and it can also be submitted for consideration as a public type if it starts to be used widely.

Totally new and somewhat bewildered - noticed that the Music domain does not contain 'music scores'. I want to eventually upload a bunch of info / links related to various music scores, specifically choral music scores held by our library. At this point, not at all sure how to accomplish this but a good start would be finding the correct topic. Many thanks for help in adding: music scores, choral music scores, musical scores or let me know where these are.

Infobuddha—Thanks for your comment. The music domain is still growing and evolving, and feedback is always helpful. In what sense is a score, for your purposes, different from compositions and arrangements? Do you specially need to describe attributes of the physical objects, or the publications of multiple (nearly-)identical physical objects, or the music described by the objects?

A good starting point would be to list the properties that you want a score to have, and a good way to do that is to prototype a type in your own domain. Let us know if you have any questions about that; the music domain would be a good place to continue the discussion.

              Welcome!

infobuddha, It seems like the "Arrangement" type would work. I think the term "score" and "arrangement" could be used inter-changeably. Currently, "Arrangement" has only one property, "Arrangement of" which points to the composition (type "Composition"). I do think "Arrangement" could use some other properties: one comes to mind: "Arranged by", expected (new) type "Arranger" There are different kinds of arrangements. Rather than have that be a property, perhaps having additional types that impart the relevant properties of arrangements would make more sense: "Choral Arrangement" "Big Band Arrangement" "Orchestral Arrangement" As always, there are many ways to slice this pie. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this...

Hi there - I'm missing a lot of abstract types. Such types that may be be used to classify a knowledge domain from a more abstract perspective. Types like: Idea, Process, Task, etc. and relationships like: Assigned_To, Interested_In, etc. In this way Freebase could also be used as a kind of project management tool. So firstly how about a project management domain? Later on this could be expanded to a more general process management domain (business, knowledge, whatever needs to be managed).

You're always welcome to create types of your own and if you think they'd be generally useful and suggest that they be promoted for public use.

We're still defining guidelines for what kinds of content will be most useful to store on Freebase - you should bear in mind that any data input will be visible to everyone, which could be a non-starter for certain kinds of project management activities. This isn't to say Freebase couldn't be used in that way, but there are definitely many other platforms that are designed more specifically for that kind of purpose.

Yeah and that was my next question. Does Freebase consider to make it possible to use Freebase for closed circuits with restricted access. This would be a key feature for commercial application of Freebase. Companies would the be able to control collaboration. I know it's kind of contradictory to the Freebase name but it's a shame to force commercial ontology development to proprietary systems (and a waste of ressources).

Concerning project management. Yes there are a lot of systems that handle this like there's a lot of systems handling CRM, finance, HRM, CMS, whatever. But all these systems could (and should) be handled within an ontology because they are all just specialized instances of a more general database.

Feel free to try modeling a project management schema if you're interested. Might be instructive to see how that works.

I'm interested in a domain and set of types that focus specifically on the future. This goes beyond simply having dates that are at some point in the future. There is a broad range of types (trends, events, forecast, scenarios, etc.) that I need to work with as a professional futurist. About 6-7 years ago I identified a series of these types and their interrelationships as part of an effort to create an XML-based Futures Studies Markup Language. From the quick look that I've taken at Freebase, it appears that some of that old work may finally prove to be useful.

The challenge/opportunity with future-oriented data domains and types is that it can make use of much of the work done on basic types (people, locations, etc.). There is a significant amount of overlap in some areas with a history domain and associated types.

              Hi Sarah:

I've been mulling over the Trend, Event, and Forecast types I've created. I have a couple of questions and am wondering if you and some other folks can take a quick look at what I've got done.

              1. Trends and Events are linked. A Trend can contain several Events, set up as either a Supporting Event or Countervailing Event. I want to make sure that users can move back and forth easily between the events and the trends.

              2. Trends can be linked to other trends (Supporting Trend and Countervailing Trend). Again, I want users to be able to move back and forth easily so they can look at all trends that associated.

              3. Events can contain other Events. For example, the Event "World War 2" has several other events (for example, individual battles) that are included within it. It is possible that these events will have further events embedded within them. Movement back and forth from these events is important.

Have I set up the properties, etc. correctly for these different types in order to have a structure that is easy to navigate up and down in?

I do think we need broad support on Freebase for an event type.

First, let me make a distinction between what I mean by "Event" and the thread a couple items down on organized events (for example, a rock concert, a party, etc.)

The kind of event I need for futures research purposes is much more akin to the "Historical Events" type that I think you refer to. I added my own "Event" type simply because the "Historical Events" type was not complete enough for my particular needs.

However, I think current and historical events will be a major element of any data collection. As such, it would make a lot of sense to have broad, general support for an "Event" type. Having a bunch of slightly different "Event" types would be a significant pain in the behind and ends up defeating the purpose of Freebase.

If you have any suggestions on how we can pull together a common "Event" type, I'm certainly willing to work with folks on it.

In response to Peter's questions to Sarah (above):

              1. In the trend type, "countervailing event" and "supporting event" have expected types of topic. If you make the expected type event, you'll be able to link events and trends directly, if you also add a reverse property on event.

              2. This looks good to me. I'd consider reordering the properties so the supporting/countervailing pair is nearer the supported/opposed pair, and possibly renaming "countervailing trend" to "opposing trend" to make the relationship between those two properties clearer, but these are just cosmetic suggestions.

              3. The included/higher-level event properties also look good to me; you'll find exactly parallel structures throughout Freebase. If you look at the military domain, there's a parallel structure to this that's explicitly for military conflicts.

Also, I have several questions about more detailed aspects of setting up types. Comments would be much appreciated.

              1. I have a number of "Trend" properties (Trend Timing, Trend Scope, etc.) that have values set up as integers. These values are intended for use in calculating an overall Trend Impact value. Should I have a "Trend Impact" property that somehow calculates a value based on the other properties, or should I set up the "Trend Impact" using a calculation in a Javascript or other function when the data is displayed on a page. It is important to be able to search and sort trends based on their impact (for example, "Show me all trends with an impact greater than 20" or "Sort all the trends from highest to lowest impact." I'm assuming that this kind of search and sort points towards having a "Trend Impact" property. That then leads to the questions of how I would do such a calculation for that property.

              2. Assume that I want to include the development of a new technology as part of an event (for example, the World War 2 event includes another subordinate event that is "The first operational use of a jet fighter." I want information on the Me-262 jet fighter developed and flown by Germany towards the end of WW2, and that information is available via the "Aircraft" type. When I link in that content, I get a name that says "Me-262". I need a name that is more appropriate for my Event type (i.e., "The first operational use of...") How can I use the Me-262 content from "Aircraft" and still get the name/title I need for my event without changing the name in the "Aircraft" type?

I've created the "Issue" type so emerging problems/challenges can be entered into the system. I have two properties -- Issue Opponent and Issue Proponent -- to identify those who say there is no issue and those who say there is one. The opponents and proponents can be either people or organizations. How do I set it up so that these properties can be either, instead of having a separate pair of properties for people and organizations.

The way to do this is to create a new type, something like (but with a better name than) "Issue Opinion-Haver" that would link to issue, and could be applied as a co-type to the person, organization, agency, racehorse, etc. that supports or opposes the issue. I made up "issue opinion-haver" because I think it makes more sense to have a single type for this with two properties (e.g., issues opposes; issues supports) rather than two types "Issue Opponent" and "Issue Proponent" with one property each.

              1) I would think that something like "Trend Impact" should be calculated from the other properties when its displayed (I'm assuming that you are talking about displaying it in an external application of some kind, since Freebase doesn't have this capability.)

              2) I think you might need a property on event along the lines of "topics related to this event" which should have a new type as the expected property (I can't think of any good type names for this off-hand -- naming often turns out the be the hardest part of schema design!). Since the event "first operational use of a jet aircraft" is not the same thing as the "Me-252" (the aircraft topic covers a lot of things about the aircraft model, from its design to its final disposition, while the event topic is about a specific instance of its use), I don't think using the topic of the aircraft for the event makes sense.
